Shiny!
Last night, David and I went to the Champaign Can't Stop the Serenity, a charity screening of Joss Whedon's Serenity to raise money for Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now.
It was pretty impressive. Of the 29 cities holding such an event, Champaign was only one of five to completely sell out the theater. Pretty much everyone showed up, too. According to the website, this event raised about $2,200 for the charity, which is more than Pittsburgh, London, Charlotte, and Madison. Not bad for a little college town.
This is the second year for the event. Last year, Serenity showings raised $50,000. This year, the Champaign show opened by showing Joss Whedon's acceptance speech for an award he was given by Equality Now. In true Joss fashion, even his speech was pretty entertaining:

Unsurprisingly entertaining and poignant.
I'm glad you were able to go. New financial hardships kept us from being able to.
It's all my fault.
You had a perfectly good excuse. And if it makes you feel better, you have Joss's permission (as his official spokesperson), when things are better financially, to rent Serenity and donate $10 to Equality Now.
I forget, did you guys ever get around to watching Firefly? If not, I'd suggest watching that first. Otherwise, some parts of the movie will lose their impact and it might spoil parts of the TV show for you.
It was a great event, and a wonderful chance to see the Big Damn Movie again on a big damn screen. I wish I knew the woman's name who arranged the local screening; she deserves a big damn round of applause... okay, I'm big damn done now.
(I mean, she has to be cool... she was wearing the same Joss t-shirt that Narc was wearing. Hee! And yeah, I bought it for him, so I'm cool by default.)
Crap, I wanted to go to this, then got busy with other stuff.
Glad you guys enjoyed it, and that it sold out!
There's always next year, Matthew!
