Charity suggestions

Most of us are about to get a fairly hefty check from the government as an "economic stimulus." Personally, I think they money could have been better spent on, say, a major public works project in New Orleans, but hey, you work with the economy you have, not the one you'd have had if Gore had been elected you wish you had.

So my options are pretty much: save it, spend it, or give it away. I could save it, sure. Spending it means basically buying stuff made in China. So I'm thinking about giving a big chunk of it away, but I'm not sure where to. Can anyone suggest any worthy charities?

On the other hand, I'm also thinking about buying a Wii.

UPDATE: I guess I should have said some of the charities I had in mind already. My list now includes: Human Rights Campaign, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, The Wounded Warriors Project, America's Second Harvest, Planned Parenthood, Electronic Frontier Foundation, ACLU, the Democratic National Committee, and probably one or two others I can't think of right now. I think two or three, at most, is what I need to decide on. Thanks for your suggestions.

Since my special check is more than I get from my regular refund any given year, it's going to stimulate my savings account for the time being.

As for charities, how about The Fistula Foundation? "A Walk to Beautiful" was on NOVA recently, and I don't think I stopped crying the whole time it was on.

If I was going to spend it, I'd like to think it would go towards replacing my rapidly aging Ford Tortise or purchasing more permanent housing, but, let's face it: I'd blow it all on expensive food and even more expensive perfume.

My check is going to finish my home repairs before November.

If I were to give it to charity, I'd give it to Planned Parenthood, Southern Poverty Law Center, or Food Gatherers (local food collection agency).

If I WEREN'T going to spend it on my house or give it to charity I would get some cobination of:

a wii, an xbox, or both
lots of BPAL
the cds I've been lusting after
another meal at Tapawingo
a massage every two weeks

Fig- You like BPAL?!?! *squeals and jumps up and down*

I've pared down my imp collection quite a bit over the past year. For a while, I was afraid they were going to take over my dresser.

You know me... I'd say give a little to the Humane Society, but that's just me being a predictable softie. And since you asked I'd vote against the Wii, because the last thing you need is more reasons to not leave the apartment. Just sayin'.

I gotta say I am a fan of the Wii. However, right now there are few games that are fun without a crowd, at least in my opinion.

What's BPAL?

Black phoenix alchemy lab.

Search for it on the web and check it out. Don't be put off by the goth-ness of their webpages.

They make really cool scents. I am not a perfume-y person. Narc can tell you that he has rarely seen me wear make up and more rarely smelled me wear perfume.

I one a small lot at a charity raffle and I was not thrilled...until I opened the little imps and then I was completely hooked. Moon-grrl, can you do a better job of explaining?

I can't imagine a better explanation than the website: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. It's a product that just sounds so incredibly neat that I have absolutely no use for.

I just noticed they have three Neil Gaiman inspired categories. Excuse me while I squeal with pleasure.

Somehow I just knew M-G and Fig would get along.
